  A Warm Welcome

Welcome to Insight Scotland. As a relational integrative counsellor and EMDR practitioner, I work therapeutically with adults experiencing anxiety, depression and low self esteem.  I have supported past clients with issues such as processing complex and single event trauma, adverse childhood experiences, attachment and relationship difficulties, managing family dynamics, loss & grief, addiction, health issues, ageing, gender issues and living with neurodiversity.

have a relationship centred counselling approach as, according to research and my own experience, meaningful change happens best within a safe and collaborative therapeutic relationship—one where you can share your worries, or the things you keep private from others, and be held safely with compassion and acceptance.

I try to remove barriers to counselling by offering affordable, flexible options to help you access the support you need. Sessions can be weekly or fortnightly, online or in-person. Concessions rates are available for low income clients.

I offer a free 20 minute first welcome session.

The Counselling Process

Before formally starting working together, a short introduction session would normally take place. This is a free *20-minute consultation which provides an opportunity for us to meet and for you to tell me a bit about yourself and what you hope to get out of counselling. It also offers space to ask any questions and to discuss our working agreement. This normally happens by phone or online.

If you are a counsellor seeking supervision, this would be similar process.

There are different methods of support offered at Insight Scotland.

Insight Counselling:

This is talk based integrative counselling which uses humanistic, cognitive behavioural or psychodynamic approaches - adapting this to your needs and preferences.  This type of counselling can help you process life events and your feelings, develop insight into situations and relationship patterns and then take steps forward while being supported.

If you have experienced trauma, talking can be an important first step. But you might need more than talking therapy to process your experiences. Core Insight is offered as an option.

Core Insight Psychotherapy:

Core Insight ranges from simple body focussed approaches including basic mindfulness, grounding techniques and somatic exercises to EMDR. (Eye Movement, Desensitisation & Reprocessing.)

As a trained EMDR Practitioner (CPCAB), EMDR bi-lateral stimulation is offered as 90 minute psychotherapy sessions which are in-person at my practice, EMDR is an evidence based psychotherapy treatment designed to reduce the distress linked to traumatic memories. This requires working through 8 phases from history & treatment plan,  preparation and assessment, desensitisation, installation, closure and re-evaluation. Evidence shows this approach to be highly beneficial for CPTSD and PTSD.

You might only be wanting short term counselling or looking for longer term support. Review and feedback is ongoing but we would normally formally review our work every 6-8 weeks to check in with how things are going for you and to agree together any changes to the work, add new goals or decide any next steps. Endings in therapeutic relationships are important and, where possible, we would hopefully be able to discuss and plan this together when the time seems right.

Working with you

It is important to me to try and be flexible and accessible to as many people as possible from a range of different circumstances. If you have a special requirement, please let me know and I will try and meet it where possible. I have a limited number of counselling concession rates for individuals with low incomes and flexible ways of working to suit a range of lifestyles.

Client Feedback

Personal, supportive, guidance. Anna has been insightful and empathetic and has helped me understand truths about myself. These have made me more resilient to crises and able to appreciate good times.

David Higgins

Client

My counselling session with Anna is special. It's where I'm safe and supported. It's where I can be me and talk about my deepest fears and sorrows. It's where I get the confidence to carry on.

Isobel Simpson

Client

This has been my first venture into counselling. In the beginning I was nervous, but Anna had a really warm and kind approach to helping me deal with my initial issues. She has subsequently supported my personal growth by giving me the space, time, and most importantly, encouragement to develop my self-esteem.

Elaine Philips

Client

The space that has been created has become one that is important to me as it's where I feel listened to, understood and safe.  Anna is down to earth, non-judgemental and is attentive to my feelings, emotions and needs during the sessions.
